2022 NF-POGO-Eurofleets+-DTU Aqua Shipboard Training Fellowship onboard HERAS cruise

General Information

22 Jun 2022 to 7 Jul 2022

This cruise forms part of an international coordinated survey monitoring the populations of herring and sprat in the North Sea and adjacent waters. The whole survey area is covered annually during June and July by vessels from Norway, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, The Netherlands and Denmark. The Danish vessel, Dana, has participated in this survey since its beginning in 1981 and will participate again in 2022.

This survey uses a combination of acoustic methods and biological sampling of pelagic fish to achieve the following

  1. Map distribution of sprat and herring in the survey area.
  2. Provide indices of abundance and biomass by age of the sprat and herring stocks in the survey area for use in population assessments and fisheries advice.
  3. Provide information on hydrographic conditions throughout the survey area to help understand relationships with pelagic fish distribution.
  4. Provide information on zooplankton dryweight biomass in survey area to investigate relationships with abundance and distribution of pelagic fish.

Priority areas

The DANA IBTS cruise involve bottom trawling, zooplancton sampling, CTD, water profiles and acoustic monitoring

What is offered

During the campaign, deep-stratified demersal trawls for fish stocks are conducted at daytime and paired with other measurements (e.g., hydrographic, physico-chemical, biological) at night-time.

The trainee will collaborate with the scientific crew in all sampling activities during the entirety of the cruise.
